This Year 6 'Comparing and Ordering Numbers' series of lessons is jammed packed full of exciting ways to teach your class about eight-digit numbers and their place value.

They will recap their knowledge of place value, practise ordering decimal numbers, use negative numbers in context, calculate intervals across zero and solve practical problems.

Lesson 1

Writing and Identifying Numbers

This series of lessons begins with a recap of what an eight-digit number is. The children's ability to write numbers as numerals and words will be challenged through a variety of activities. They will also practise identifying the value of each digit in a number.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Place value poster
  • Matching cards
  • Question cards

Lesson 2

Ordering Numbers

This lesson focuses on ordering positive numbers with up to two decimal places to 10,000,000. The children will be challenged to order groups of four numbers. During the plenary the children will order race times from the Olympics and find the difference between different competitors' times.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Challenge cards

Lesson 3

Finding the Difference

During this lesson your class will find the difference between positive numbers. The slides go through examples of how to calculate the difference between large numbers before challenging children to have a go independently. There is also the option of timing sports events and finding the difference between their times and distances.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets

Lesson 4

Negative Numbers

In this lesson your class will apply their knowledge of finding the difference between two numbers when calculating intervals across zero. Your class will be introduced to negative numbers through temperatures. For the teaching input, the slides model finding the difference using a number line to support the children as they travel across zero. During the lesson they will either find the difference between a variety of temperatures or explore the difference in height between land areas that are above and below sea level.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Above sea level cards
  • Below sea level cards

Lesson 5

Solving Problems

The final lesson in this series gets your class to apply the skills they have used this week to solve practical problems. The children will need to work out what the question is asking them to find out and choose an appropriate method to solve it. The problems include ordering high scores, ordering javelin throws, finding the difference between temperatures and creating their own word problems.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
