Describing Dinosaurs

This themed dinosaur activities KS1 planning pack challenges your Year 1 class to write a description of a dinosaur using their knowledge and understanding of adjectives.

After being introduced to adjectives as describing words, your class will have the opportunity to build these words into noun phrases describing the different dinosaur pictures included in the resources of this ready-to-use five-lesson pack. They will build their descriptions into full sentences after using the engaging lesson slides to discuss the use and formation of capital letters as well as full stops at the end of a sentence.

The dinosaur activities described in these lessons give your Year 1 class plenty of opportunities to verbalise their ideas and rehearse their writing orally before they write their descriptions of dinosaurs. Finally, the children will be challenged to use the adjectives they have investigated throughout this scheme of work to begin to compare different dinosaurs using the suffix '-er'.

What words can your class think of to describe different dinosaurs? Introduce your class to adjectives and help them choose different adjectives to describe a dinosaur's appearance. Challenge them to match adjectives to different dinosaurs using the printable resources included in this Year 1 adjectives lesson or use the alternative activity to get the children up and active as they decide on which dinosaur is being described by adjectives you read aloud to them.

Dinosaur Noun Phrases

Build upon your class's understanding of adjectives as they begin to link them to nouns based around a dinosaur with this complete Dinosaur Noun Phrases KS1 lesson pack.

Challenge the children to create simple dinosaur noun phrases to label a dinosaur by assigning one adjective to a suitable noun. Using the included lesson slides, you can bring up the discussion around whether an adjective is suitable for the corresponding noun or if it's a silly choice.

Supported by the included printable resources, the children will independently label different features on a dinosaur with simple noun phrases including a suitable adjective and a noun. Alternatively, the children can use dice to generate simple noun phrases and draw the resulting feature from their imaginations!

Dinosaur Sentences

This Dinosaur Sentences Year 1 lesson pack comes with slides, plans, activity ideas and printable worksheets themed around dinosaurs to help engage your KS1 class when learning about capital letters and full stops.

Using the descriptions that they have been working on in previous lessons, the children will begin to build sentences of their own using the resources to support their discussions. They will be encouraged to use their editing skills to identify where capital letters and full stops are needed, including capitalising the pronoun I.

Using all their learning from the previous lessons the children will write their own sentences about dinosaurs in this Dinosaur Writing Year 1 descriptive writing lesson.

Supported by the printable resources which are included in this planning pack, the children will choose and describe the features of a dinosaur. Alternatively, they can use the resources to create their own dinosaur and describe this new imaginary dinosaur. The included slides will help your class discuss and prepare for writing independently and help to inspire their ideas.

Adding -er

This lesson challenges your Year 1 class to add the suffix 'er' to adjectives where no change to the root word is needed.

They will use the pictures on the included lesson slides to begin to verbally compare dinosaurs, focusing on the 'er' words they already use. They then explore and discuss adding the suffix 'er' to different adjectives to compare two nouns. After practising this together, the children will do this independently using the supporting printable resources.
