Earning a Living

Help your children understand how people in the UK and the rest of the world earn a living in a variety of ways with this interesting scheme of work for Year 3 and Year 4. Your class will explore various jobs in various sectors, before investigating industries around the world and looking at why some adults don't work and some children do.

Jobs

The first lesson in this series starts by asking your class why people work and why working is important. It then goes on to explore some of the many different jobs people can do to earn a living. Your children will think of lots of different job titles to explore and describe from accountant to army general.

This lesson delves a little deeper into the world of work and looks at some of the different job sectors people work in. Children will find out the kinds of jobs that people can do for each sector, such as the educational, financial and agricultural sectors. They can then think about which sector they think they would most like to work in when they grow up and why.

This lesson gives your class a glimpse into industry and economy in the UK. They will start by looking at what a business is and some of the different types of services businesses can offer. Your class will then go on to explore that countries all have different strengths in terms of the industries they provide. In addition, they will identify some of the main industries in different parts of the UK.

Earning Around the World

This interesting lesson recaps what the main industries in Britain are then goes on to explore some of the main industries in different countries around the world. Children learn about trade and how climates around the world affect what can be grown and exported in a country. It then looks at specific jobs that people in different parts of the world have. They can also learn about fair trade.

Unemployment

This lesson explores some of the reasons why some adults do not work, including retirement, before looking more closely at unemployment. Your children will find out some of the reasons for unemployment and think about why unemployment can be difficult for the person and their family.

Child Labour

This challenging lesson starts by asking your class whether they would prefer to go to work to earn money or stay at school. They will then be introduced to some children who have no choice but to go to work to earn money for their families. Your class will explore the parts of the world where child labour remains a problem today and explore the effects this has on the people and economy of the country.
