Geometric Shapes

Geometric Shapes

Build on your Year 6 class’s growing knowledge of the properties of shapes by exploring in greater detail the ways in which shapes can be drawn or constructed accurately.

Over the course of the five lessons (should you choose to teach them all in sequence; they may also be purchased and delivered as standalone lessons), children will learn more about measuring and drawing circles accurately, finding missing angles inside and outside shapes, drawing regular and irregular polygons accurately, and constructing 3-D shapes using nets and wireframes.

This downloadable series of Shape lessons for Year 6 include detailed lesson plans, slideshow presentations and printable teaching resources.

Lesson 1

Measuring Circles

This first lesson focuses on the properties of circles. Children will learn how to measure the circumference, radius and diameter of a circle, and how the radius measurement can be used when accurately drawing circles using a pair of compasses and a ruler. During either of the two included activities, children may practise drawing circles and their diameter/radius lines accurately.

This downloadable lesson comes with a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Measuring circles sheet

Lesson 2

Missing Angles

Let’s find missing angles! This lesson builds on your children’s prior knowledge of angles challenging them to derive missing angles on a straight line and around a point using other known angles. They then use this method to help them find missing angles within polygons including triangles and quadrilaterals as well as angles which are vertically opposite. Challenge your class to put their understanding to the test in various problem solving activities.

Lesson 3

Drawing 2D Shapes Accurately

Continuing to build on your children’s mastery of making and measuring shapes, this lesson focuses on drawing a range of 2D shapes (regular polygons, irregular polygons, circles) accurately by using maths equipment to check the lengths of sides, the angles of vertices and the radius of circles. As with all PlanBee Maths lessons, there’s a choice of two activities – during either of which, children may practise the skills demonstrated on the included slideshow.

Lesson 4

Drawing 3D Shapes

Challenge children not only to describe 3D shapes using specific mathematical vocabulary, but also to create isometric drawings of 3D shapes based on given descriptions. The included slides explain clearly and in simple terms how to use isometric paper when drawing 3D shapes, and both of the included activities provide opportunities for children to practise drawing or describing shapes.

Lesson 5

Make Polyhedrons

Take a look at the ways in which polyhedrons may be constructed by studying exploded diagrams, then by making wireframes or nets of 3-D shapes! This lesson includes two activities, one of which requires children to use a range of maths equipment (don’t worry – it’s easily adapted, depending on the resources you have available!), the other of which challenges children to design packaging.
