Let’s find the total by grouping

Introduce your class to the different ways that they can express multiplication using concrete and pictorial resources. Use this five-lesson scheme to teach the concepts of doubling, repeated addition and arrays, linking each to multiplication and the language used to describe different multiplication calculations.

Counting in Twos, Fives and Tens

Challenge your class to take their understanding of counting in multiples of two, five and ten to a deeper level by exploring sequences of numbers which may not always start on zero and are both increasing and decreasing sequences. Provide an opportunity for the children to develop their reasoning skills when figuring out if a given number will appear in a sequence.

Revisit doubling with your class and explore it from the viewpoint of multiplication. Use the language of multiplication to explain how doubling is two groups of a number and use these groups to find a total. This lesson provides your class the opportunity to experiment and discuss doubling in a different way.

Help your class make links between repeated addition calculations with multiplications using a pictorial representation to help them. Use the printable game board and resources in this lesson to give the children the opportunity to look at this concept in a different way.

Help your class investigate how arrays can be used to represent multiplications and how they can be grouped using the rows and columns. Challenge your class to build or draw arrays based on different multiplication calculations.

Multiplication Problems

Challenge your class to help some shop assistants stack their shelves using arrays to find out how many items can fit on different sets of shelves. Your class will have the opportunity to discuss and complete arrays to determine if a set of objects will fit on a given shelf, or find different ways the set can be arranged into various arrays.
