Comparing Capacities

Reintroduce your class to the concept of capacity and volume in this first lesson in which they will look at the capacity of different containers. They will be asked to investigate and describe the containers’ shapes and sizes before using water or pourable solids to compare the capacities. They then use or = symbols to record their comparisons.

Help your class use simple multiples to compare different capacities. Allow them to experiment and play with various containers and use comparison language such as half as big, four times smaller etc. using the complete resources available in this lesson.

Help your class revise how to read scales and measure volumes of liquid below one litre. They will read volumes which are multiples of 50 ml using the bingo resources or try their hand at mixology by creating their own mocktails.
