Let’s Measure Capacity

Let’s Measure Capacity

Teach your Year 2 class to measure and compare capacity and volume with a variety of practical learning activities as well as differentiated worksheets and printable resources. These five complete lessons build on your children's growing knowledge and understanding of capacity and volume.

There's plenty of opportunities for them to use their estimating and measuring skills to determine, compare and order capacities of different containers or measure volumes of liquid. This capacity Year 2 unit of work comes with slides, plans, activity ideas and printable resources; everything you need to challenge your class and develop their measuring skills.

This five-lesson scheme comes with slides, plans, activity ideas and printable resources; giving you everything you need to challenge your class and develop their measuring skills.

Lesson 1

Comparing Capacities

Reintroduce your class to the concept of capacity and volume in this first lesson in which they will look at the capacity of different containers. They will be asked to investigate and describe the containers’ shapes and sizes before using water or pourable solids to compare the capacities. They then use or = symbols to record their comparisons.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Photo sheet

Lesson 2

Comparing Capacities 2

Help your class use simple multiples to compare different capacities. Allow them to experiment and play with various containers and use comparison language such as half as big, four times smaller etc. using the complete resources available in this lesson.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Capacity cards
  • Comparison cards
  • Worksheet
  • Photo sheet

Lesson 3

Measuring Capacity

Help your class revise how to read scales and measure volumes of liquid below one litre. They will read volumes which are multiples of 50 ml using the bingo resources or try their hand at mixology by creating their own mocktails.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Bingo pair cards
  • Bingo game cards
  • Mocktail cards

Lesson 4

Measuring and Ordering

Give your class the opportunity to use and apply their learning about measuring volumes and capacities as they begin to explore scales with a variety of intervals and ordering the volumes that they measure.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Container cards
  • Worksheets

Lesson 5

Measuring Small Amounts

How do we measure capacities and volumes less than 10 ml? Investigate how we can use teaspoons of liquids to find the capacities of small containers. Challenge your class to add together small amounts to find the total volume or capacity.

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
