Let’s Measure Time

Introduce your class to the concept of measuring time and the units we use to measure time. Discuss how seconds, minutes and hours relate to one another and help your class become more familiar with these units. Investigate the different types of timers we can use to measure time and use them to see how quickly the children can complete different activities.

Calendar Dates

Explore how a calendar tracks time and how different dates are said and displayed with your class. Help them understand how to find dates on a calendar and ask them questions to check their understanding.

Investigate the different units that are used to measure time and how they relate to one another. Teach your class to think about time as something that can be measured and discuss which unit they would use to measure different types of activities.

Comparing Amounts of Time

Challenge your class to use their knowledge and understanding of units of time and how they relate to one another to compare different timed activities. Teach your class to compare different amounts of time by looking at their units, and then at the amounts as they develop their use of appropriate time language.

Show your class how to time different activities using timers. Give them the opportunity to estimate times using ‘chimpanzee’ counting and have them explore the different kinds of timers that they can use to measure time.

Measuring and Ordering

Challenge your class to apply their understanding of measuring time as they find out how quickly they can complete different activities and which one they complete in the fastest time. Introduce them to tangram puzzles and test them to see how quickly they can complete them.
