Let's halve and quarter

In this series of five Maths lesson plan packs for Year 1, children will recap prior learning about halves and quarters, firstly by looking at 2-D shapes. They'll go on to develop methods for finding halves and quarters of quantities including centimetres and pounds/pence.

To increase their speed, accuracy and efficiency, practical hands-on methods are shown for halving and quartering countable sets of objects. A choice of differentiated learning activities are included with every lesson, along with slides, printable resources and detailed plans with assessment questions and plenary activities – virtually everything you need!

 

Find Half

Recap and build on your class's growing understanding of halving with this, the first lesson in a week's learning about halving and quartering. The detailed teaching input and slides challenge children to draw dividing lines to halve pictures of shapes and objects, to shade half of the squares inside a rectilinear shape, and to halve countable sets of objects by sharing them into two equal groups. There's a choice of differentiated learning activities included as well as a range of printable resources. All you'll need is some tracing paper and some plastic counters or Maths cubes!

Halving Quantities

To build up children's developing strategies for halving, this lesson's included slides share quick, efficient methods for halving countable sets of objects as well as quantities of solids and liquids. After that, children can put these new skills into practice by halving quantities of solids using balance scales, or making arrays of sets of objects to help halve them quickly and accurately.

To help children become quicker, more accurate and more efficient when halving and quartering, the included slides and teaching input with this lesson explain a practical method using Maths resources such as cubes or counters. There's also a range of printable resources for both of the differentiated activities included, where your learners can practise and consolidate their newly learnt halving and quartering skills.

Help your class find quarters quickly by teaching them the simple, efficient and accurate method shown on the included slides. After that, children will have opportunities to practise their new-found skills in either of the included, differentiated halving and quartering activities.

To round off the week's learning, this lesson recaps the halving and quartering skills and knowledge gained in previous lessons. The included slides explain how to halve and quarter shapes, sets of objects and quantities such as centimetres or kilograms. After you've delivered the teaching input, there's a choice of differentiated activities where children may put their skills into practice, either during a big quiz, or by tackling some simple halving and quartering problems.
