This 3D shape lesson for Year 1 begins by exploring the differences between 2D and 3D shapes. Your class will describe some differences between cubes and other cuboids to recap the learning they did in the previous lesson of this series. They will then discuss the faces of each 3D shape using simple terms as they become familiar with the properties of cuboids.

The final lesson in this properties of shapes KS1 Year 1 3D shapes lesson challenges your class to use mathematical language to describe shapes, and learn how to read and say ‘sphere’! The slides describe some shapes with curved surfaces and challenge children to learn the word ‘sphere’. Following this they are challenged to think of sphere-shaped objects, or spot sphere-shaped objects in the classroom. Your children will engage with some of the four included learning activities which include sorting, identifying and matching shapes.
