Properties of 2D Shapes

Quadrilaterals

The first lesson Maths series focuses on quadrilaterals. To kick things off, find out what your class already know about 2D shape, then build on that by exploring the properties of a range of quadrilaterals. Go on to classify and sort shapes using lists, tables, Carroll diagrams and even ‘stained glass’ shape colour-coding pictures!

This Properties of Triangles KS2 Year 4 Maths lesson gets straight to the point by identifying the unique properties of different types of triangle. Your class will use a range of methods for sorting and classifying the triangles, including continuums, tables and branching diagrams.

Perimeter of Polygons

The included slides with this lesson explain in easy-to-understand terms how to calculate the perimeter of polygons by measuring and totalling the lengths of their sides. There's plenty of opportunities for children to practise this during either of the included activities, too!

Area of a 2D Shape

During this lesson, your class will learn how to find the area of a 2D shape. First children will find the area of rectangles by counting squares, and then they will apply the same methods to find the areas of more complex compound shapes. As with all of the 'Properties of 2-D Shapes' lessons, there's a choice of two activities included, so you can choose one that best suits your learners!

The final lesson in the series gets your class sorting 2D shapes. It gives your children a chance to show how they’ve progressed by identifying, describing and sorting a wide variety of 2D shapes according to all of the criteria they’ve learned about during the week!
