Seaside Snacks

These super Seaside Snack DT lessons for KS1 will get your class tasting, exploring and thinking about a range of foods. The first five lessons each centre around a different element of a picnic, encouraging your class to experience the flavours, textures and colours of different foods. For the final lesson your children will have the opportunity to design their own seaside picnic, while thinking carefully about what makes a balanced meal.

Lesson 1

Savoury Pinwheels

During the first lesson in this series your class will make a savoury seaside snack. They will create pinwheels either using bread or pastry. Your class will develop their fine motor skills as they use tools to prepare and create their pinwheel.

Lesson 2

Edible Boats

In the second lesson of this DT scheme of work your class will make edible boats. After describing the shapes of the boats they can see in photos they will make their own. Your class will have the option of making savoury vegetable boats or sweet fruit boats as they learn about the benefits of eating fruit and vegetables.

Your class can show their artistic flair as they make seaside animals and scenes out of a variety of fruits. They will follow instructions to shape the fruit and create their creatures. This lesson is bound to get your class enthusiastic about naming, exploring and eating fruit as they discuss why it is beneficial to eat it.

Cake Decorations

Decorate cakes with an edible seaside topper in the fourth lesson of this DT food scheme of work. Your class will use a variety of ingredients to create their cake toppers. They will develop their fine motor skills as they use icing sugar to join items together.

They will have the opportunity to add ingredients of their choice and adjust their mixture to best suit their taste.
