Vehicle Features

The first lesson in this vehicle features KS1 Year 2 series of lessons looks at a variety of different vehicles from ambulances to buggies. It encourages your class to investigate and identify different vehicle features, such as wheels, windscreens, seats and handles. They will think about what the vehicles are used for and why they need the features they have.

Your class will discuss pictures shown on a slideshow presentation before using picture cards and worksheets to share their knowledge of vehicles in this engaging ready-to-teach DT lesson for Year 2.

Wheels, Axles and Chassis

The second lesson in this vehicles series of lessons explores wheels, axies and chassis with your Year 2 class. The lesson looks at the ways that wheels and axles can be combined, as well as how axles can be attached to the chassis to make the framework for a vehicle.

Your class will have the chance to investigate axles, wheels and chassis for themselves as they use a variety of different materials to make the framework of a vehicle.

Bodywork

The third lesson in this Year 2 vehicles DT lesson will teach your class all about vehicle bodies. They will think about different vehicles and how the function and design of their bodywork varies. Your class will be given the chance to explore how to combine different materials, such and boxes, card or bottles, to create the body for a vehicle. They will also begin to think about how their vehicle could be decorated.

Design a vehicle

This design a vehicle KS1 lesson consolidates all the learning your Year 2 children have undertaken so far in this series. They will take part in discussions before they design their own vehicle. They will choose how they will construct the chassis, what kind of wheels and axles to use, how they will create the body of the vehicle and how they will make it look fantastic!

Making Vehicles

The fifth lesson in this vehicles series of lessons is the lesson your class have been eagerly anticipating - making vehicles! During this lesson, they will make vehicles based on their own designs using a variety of materials, tools and techniques.

This lesson includes teaching slides, plans and activity ideas. Please note that, due to the practical nature of this lesson, worksheets are not necessary and, therefore are not included.

Evaluation

The final lesson in this series sees your class completing DT vehicle evaluations. They will celebrate the fantastic vehicles they have produced and explore the work of other children before evaluating their own vehicles.
