What is the Qur'an and why is it important to Muslims?

A Sacred Book

This introductory lesson teaches your class about the origins of the Qur'an and why it is the sacred book of Islam. It also gives children the chance to reflect on what is sacred and important in their own lives.

Names of Allah

This lesson starts by listening to a special recitation that is said at the start of each chapter of the Qur’an. They will consider what the words ‘compassionate’ and ‘merciful’ within this recitation mean before looking at the ’99 Beautiful Names of Allah’. Through these names, your class will start to get an understanding of how Muslims view God.

A Book of Guidance

This lesson gives your class to read some extracts from the Qur’an to help them identify ways in which the Qur’an can give Muslims guidance for how to live their lives. They will then consider where they look for guidance themselves when they have a problem and consider texts that have influenced them. There is also the chance to consider ways in which the guidance in the Qur’an is similar or different to guidance in other religious texts.

Through The Generations

What do you parents want for you as you grow up? This lesson explores why Muslim children attend Madrasah to learn about the Qur'an and why this is an important part of growing up as a Muslim. Your children will also relate this to their own experiences of what their parents or other adults in their lives want for them when they grow up.

Why it is Important

This final lesson allows your class to consolidate everything they have learnt about why the Qur'an is important to Muslims and to draw their own conclusions about the question. There are plenty of opportunities for class discussion, as well as chances for your children to express their learning in a variety of ways independently.
