Let's use money

During these five money lessons for Year 1 your class will use money and become confident solving money problems. They will recognise the value of coins and notes as well as solve problems involving finding the total value of a set of coins, working out how much money is left after some money has been spent and finally working out how much change is owed in shopping scenarios.

This set of money lessons has been created to cover some of the National Curriculum measurement strand of objectives and contains lesson plans, slideshow presentations for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable teaching resources.

 
Lesson 1

Recognise coins and notes

The first lesson in this money series of lessons for Year 1 focuses on your children recognising coins and notes. They will think about the value of each coin or note. Your class will match the coins and notes to representations showing the same value.

Exchange coins and notes

The second lesson in this Let’s use money scheme of work begins by getting your class to identify coins by their descriptions. Your class will then use addition to work out the total value of a set of coins, before exchanging the group of coins for a single coin or note worth the same amount. This lesson is designed to develop your children’s confidence with solving addition problems involving money.

This lesson will encourage your class to develop their confidence and understanding of money-based problems.
