Teach your class how to turn everyday paper into spectacular arts and crafts projects with this hands-on scheme of work for KS1. Your class will investigate different types of paper and explore their different textures and features, before using a variety of techniques to create artwork from paper.

Lesson 1: Exploring Paper

The first lesson in this series gives your class the opportunity to explore some of the different ways in which paper is used by artists to create works of art and to investigate different types of paper for themselves. They will think of different words to describe the different kinds of paper they explore and think about how they could make marks on each kind.

Lesson 2: Collage

This lesson starts off by looking at some different examples of collages and then goes on to show your class how to make some creative and colourful collages of their own.

Lesson 3: Stained Glass

This lesson focuses on tissue paper and shows your class how tissue paper can be used to create a stained glass effect. After looking at some different examples of stained glass windows, your class will then follow the step-by-step instructions as shown on the slides to create their own artistic examples. There is also the option of making stained glass pots.

Lesson 4: Paper Beads

This fun lesson teaches your class how to make beads from recycled paper. Looking at some examples of beads as inspiration and how they are used by artists to create and decorate different objects, your class can then have a go at rolling their own beads to create a necklace, bracelet or keyring.

Please note that due to the practical nature of the activities, printables are not necessary and are therefore not included.

Lesson 5: Papier-Mâché

This messy but creative lesson teaches your class how to create shapes out of recycled materials, such as cardboard tubes, egg cartons and cardboard boxes, and then how to cover them in papier mâché to create sculptures.

Please note that due to the practical nature of the activities, printables are not necessary and are therefore not included.

Lesson 6: Paper Sculptures

The final lesson in this series demonstrates how paper can be manipulated to create different shapes. Drawing on some examples of sculptures by different artists, your class will then be challenged to create their own abstract paper sculptures by twisting, folding, tearing and joining paper in a variety of ways.
